Dayton brings families together for Mind, Body, Read
Sue Scott

Dayton Elementary School invited kindergarten through second grade students and their families back to school for an evening of fun. The event called “Mind, Body, Read” consisted of several activities centered on mindfulness and caring for one another.

“We want families to learn, grow and be involved together,” says second grade teacher Heather Frauhiger. “We want to promote a healthy mind and body, as well as to read with your child every day.”

Families read a book together in the library, stretched during a yoga class in the gym and created calming jars in another room. The event also included a photo booth and healthy snacks.

Teacher Carol Grady says the event was an overwhelming success. “Our hope was that families would be empowered to continue their essential role as their child’s first and foremost teacher, and that they would leave knowing their children are cared for by our staff family.”

Dayton plans to hold a similar event next semester for third through fifth grade students and their families.
